She's a fabulous plein air painter and excellent teacher of colorist methods. Here is a recent painting she did on location just steps away from where my chickens live at Green String Farm, Petaluma, CA.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRrDp4S-VWVB3W-M_BZYDAJRVASbMQxIleWn9f-LtRQnKAnAfJRJbjeSK0D7imydBTR-9B9ASHfc55-w0dbM6ZCtp9AXKMvzvJ3eV4ZlArknn8_XlJ1ZFT06F_0QxO-Qt3ICi_Q6U7510/s1600/scaled_e1325289083.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRrDp4S-VWVB3W-M_BZYDAJRVASbMQxIleWn9f-LtRQnKAnAfJRJbjeSK0D7imydBTR-9B9ASHfc55-w0dbM6ZCtp9AXKMvzvJ3eV4ZlArknn8_XlJ1ZFT06F_0QxO-Qt3ICi_Q6U7510/s320/scaled_e1325289083.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
In her recent newsletter Camille shows a step-by-step of this painting. You can access it via her website, <a href="http://www.przewodek.com/" target="_blank">Przewodek</a>.<br />
<br />
If you paint in oils, Camille has developed a tremendous tool and an excellent dvd:<br />

To unify the painting, I worked with only four colors: Avignon Orange (Maimeri Puro), Brilliant Rose (Old Holland), Azure Hue (LeFranc), and Sulfur Yellow (LeFranc).</div><div style="text-align: center;">Here are the basic colors with tints (lead white).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4jd3LBDXsqT8NmFUfZO4ObWwnOiEcySGAVCnLCvBwsmOoN5c2CqpPe-B8LAComSZeuzjNA2e8u2GmTemuICR64AQNul2llNPIVm-5awZw_qJ9rISQiJMYqk2pi91i7sJt5b8GCyKy_4A/s1600/Color-MixedNeutrals.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="158" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4jd3LBDXsqT8NmFUfZO4ObWwnOiEcySGAVCnLCvBwsmOoN5c2CqpPe-B8LAComSZeuzjNA2e8u2GmTemuICR64AQNul2llNPIVm-5awZw_qJ9rISQiJMYqk2pi91i7sJt5b8GCyKy_4A/s400/Color-MixedNeutrals.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Each is paired above with its complement and shows the neutral mix of those complements. Equal proportions were used in the above but obviously a great range is possible especially in the pair on the left.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Next picture shows the two warm colors when mixed together.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5EiwjUCD3LX5kvGwipyq_JSuUFn1U3uNKuFEd9YjSyCIlA8ALV6Tx24DIzS0WnyLVmigRwe6zpq4wL1CmLjQD0pF5XNpXI1jMba5LYVr5nfmEQKGe7fLD0OLUC-x04lb8p_45x_Zpbk4/s1600/Colors-Rose-AvignonOrange.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5EiwjUCD3LX5kvGwipyq_JSuUFn1U3uNKuFEd9YjSyCIlA8ALV6Tx24DIzS0WnyLVmigRwe6zpq4wL1CmLjQD0pF5XNpXI1jMba5LYVr5nfmEQKGe7fLD0OLUC-x04lb8p_45x_Zpbk4/s400/Colors-Rose-AvignonOrange.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The center mix (equal amounts) is a primary red with complex tones, far more interesting and appealing than using a straight primary. If you aren't familiar with Maimeri's Avignon Orange, you're missing a spectacular transparent burnt orange made from quinacridone pigment. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In the landscape scene I was painting, there were hardly any reds. So why choose a limited palette with two reds but only one blue and one off-yellow? Well, I'm using the reds mostly to neutralize the greens. I want subtle nuances that can represent the shift in light from morning to late afternoon.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Below is my color chart of three times during the day. Not shown but possible is a lighter, brighter yellow, a simple tint of Sulfur Yellow and white.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2yF1BJvnI2MsMoVnyAQ7YwYw9FCMtLZu85dcntkPP-9cGAHYTIvt2aQn8mmxVMNTNMDVPb7ahtGtmNL2wezXkFlGGMkNAUyL7v4lJ5n68uoYTwJ8hr5AxNF6XG26N2zBbtIRRND6Im_g/s1600/Color-Vineyard-times.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="249" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2yF1BJvnI2MsMoVnyAQ7YwYw9FCMtLZu85dcntkPP-9cGAHYTIvt2aQn8mmxVMNTNMDVPb7ahtGtmNL2wezXkFlGGMkNAUyL7v4lJ5n68uoYTwJ8hr5AxNF6XG26N2zBbtIRRND6Im_g/s640/Color-Vineyard-times.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">As you can see, the November morning is foggy in Petaluma. By noon the sky's blue and colors are more chromatic. At 4pm there's terrific clarity of lights and darks but the sun is low enough that there's no glare. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">My head-scratching question is this. To what extent do I need the pencil sketch? I'm empowered more by the <a href="http://evansencaustics.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=71&products_id=316" target="_blank">color charting</a> as a map for the final painting. After all, it isn't the shape or juxtaposition of the hills that moves me; it's the colors next to each other.</div><div style="text-align: center;">The challenge to myself: come up with compositions that show the interaction of the mixed colors <i>without </i>representative shapes.</div>Hylla Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14778545364614446114noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6576302391509132101.post-86722973117866495552011-10-08T13:55:00.000-07:002011-10-08T13:55:58.050-07:00New! They're named after two characters from Absolutely Fabulous and they are... absolutely fabulous. It was taken a couple weeks ago.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxmRZ2sU63aKPWpc5cPMfNqDPGlZmBW1kKeAJazCtwzrEVE-9ph_kiSOiWNRyHWV5C9__ockmP2XulxSq1CQ1UUTI-gmas0flGaSK3EKibaXmW-u5Ek2JB7ptM4Qp-xgKFs1Yqc31v4TE/s1600/Bubble%252CSaffron9%253A11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxmRZ2sU63aKPWpc5cPMfNqDPGlZmBW1kKeAJazCtwzrEVE-9ph_kiSOiWNRyHWV5C9__ockmP2XulxSq1CQ1UUTI-gmas0flGaSK3EKibaXmW-u5Ek2JB7ptM4Qp-xgKFs1Yqc31v4TE/s320/Bubble%252CSaffron9%253A11.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Yesterday Bubble's left eye was suddenly cloudy, milky blueish white. After online research about cataracts and possible treatment, I decided that surgery was not an option for a small dog because of the risk with anesthesia.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Today Bubble met a lovely animal eye doctor, gave blood for tests with total calm, and was her normal kissy self. It wasn't a cataract. It was glaucoma and the floodgates had opened, clearly building internally over time but Bubble never told me she had pain. She is irreversibly blind in that eye. The eye pain is a whopper. In the morning, on this Rosh Hashana, Bubble will go back to the doctor and have her left eye removed. The anesthesiologist has never lost a patient. Bubble's eyesight in the left eye can never come back but the pain will be there as long as the eye is there. So the cure means getting rid of the pain and leaving Bubble whole. Whole but without that eye. She will look just as she does above but like her tiny brown eyelid is closed on that side, barely noticeable on her teensy face.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I'm told that after the surgery dogs are shockingly like puppies again, full of energy that pain had pushed away. Looking forward to a new year and great healthy outcomes for everyone!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHiBth1ro3cDVHK5cIba-MwrwnIG6Dg-cUrZtJp3kVcFGJIS6Y2kLkcwzX45EMZLznt2kmbrxY8gLQM1Pq2jxb7H2D4QhaWQCZSSIFL-kv7ylcjhHNuVEEnMkyJjFrIQAxqgoW5qWQzQQ/s1600/BubbleFavoriteToy2007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHiBth1ro3cDVHK5cIba-MwrwnIG6Dg-cUrZtJp3kVcFGJIS6Y2kLkcwzX45EMZLznt2kmbrxY8gLQM1Pq2jxb7H2D4QhaWQCZSSIFL-kv7ylcjhHNuVEEnMkyJjFrIQAxqgoW5qWQzQQ/s320/BubbleFavoriteToy2007.jpg" width="282" /></a></div>Hylla Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14778545364614446114noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6576302391509132101.post-23519702596478417142011-08-08T11:29:00.000-07:002011-08-08T11:29:02.811-07:00Artist Residency<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwgO09D1QKezPohFY5PjYBVwxdHrZOMa549yIo_40kuI6JTnn5_nd69coHgwGPmTTQYoEo_N9kdyk0SgWStf0ZEdA5Axuv-58z8oDLTlMASrJO7U7Gk6D3PBTGqMvQG_omXemJkboriZc/s1600/MBChantsKitchen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwgO09D1QKezPohFY5PjYBVwxdHrZOMa549yIo_40kuI6JTnn5_nd69coHgwGPmTTQYoEo_N9kdyk0SgWStf0ZEdA5Axuv-58z8oDLTlMASrJO7U7Gk6D3PBTGqMvQG_omXemJkboriZc/s320/MBChantsKitchen.jpg" width="302" /></a></div><br />
Yesterday was the last day of a three week artist residency sponsored by Evans Encaustics. One artist used my big studio and five HotBoxes, multiple griddles, lots of supplies to create a large body of work.<br />
This year Marci Borland delved into the heady, thoughtful aspects of her Chants series, some of which will certainly appear on her website this fall. Because the studio is at Green String Farm, there were hundreds of acres of walking, tasting fresh organic produce, and finding helping hands from the farm for heavy lifting.<br />

All I can say for sure is that Paul Simon's song, The Obvious Child, seems the perfect name. Other than a few <b>much</b> missed friends (Paula Roland, Laura Tyler, Pam Farrell, Supria Karmakar, Alexandre Masino), everything was perfection. Joanne and Cherie can take credit for the seamlessness of it all. Next year, Provincetown early June and I'll stay longer to actually get to the beach.<br />
<br />
Back at the <a href="http://www.GreenStringFarm.com/">farm</a> we have over 300 new baby chicks thriving. Not one has gotten sick and that's to the enormous credit of Kate, Meagan, and their co-grad students paying incredibly close attention. Hatched June 1 and June 8, they are very big and ate so far more than a ton of chick feed.<br />
<br />
In the farm studio a couple days ago, organizing and doing a little painting, there was a 'peep peep' and there in the hallway a tiny baby duckling. There are a few ponds which graduate farmer Joe McFadden populated with ducks born in January. Those ducks had babies before we thought it possible. I picked up the duckling and took it to the closest pond, hoping that's where it belonged. Here it is:<br />

Many tears were shed and we take comfort knowing that she had a pampered life for such a loving, gifted chicken. Cricket, wonderful Green String farmer and artist, made necklace and earrings for me.<br />

Condolences came from Paris, Tel Aviv, South Africa, Salem, NY... and a wish from Bee, who knows about such things, that Marius will be reborn. If she does and you meet her, please give her a kiss from me.<br />

A simple nail or thumbtack in the wall at the top corners, then the rare earth magnets hold artwork firmly in place.<br />
If your gallery would like the work to float away from the wall, simply tap in a 2" nail an inch in from each corner of the work and float the work and magnet. Magnets may be painted with any enamel (I like nail polish for this) so that they are less visible. <a href="http://evansencaustics.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=68&products_id=292">Details and ordering are on the website here.</a><br />

Artists are already networking post-class and hopefully will return to Sonoma/Petaluma for follow-up painting as their schedules permit. Doors are open.<br />
Though it looks like artists were focused and serious, we really did have fun.<br />
Here, some pictures, more to follow:<br />

She'll be coddled in the loft for a couple days then join Marius and the other fancy chickens at Silky Road, over at <a href="http://www.GreenStringInstitute.org/">Green String Farm</a> in Petaluma. She'll get veggies grown for Chez Panisse and it doesn't get better than that, plus she will get tons of attention and perhaps even become a Service Animal, as Marius has done! <div style="text-align: justify;">In "Mona" James Taylor sang about his pig, raised from a baby and slaughtered for the table. It's such a pretty song about such a dastardly deed. Never did I think that I'd sentence an animal to death.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Coco Chanel is a nearly eight month old cockerel who declared war on me. He attacked me repeatedly and threatened anyone else who entered the henhouse. I tried to find a new home for him but nobody wants a mean rooster. Farmer Fred had a solution that involved a shotgun. I reasoned with Coco, I tried to bribe him, I stood up to him. He is beyond reason and bribery and wants to kill me. Buttercup tried to intervene. Marge and Eloise tried to distract Coco. No dice.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Today Coco killed a pullet who he's known since they both hatched. Byebye, Coco. He's in a quarantine pen eating very well awaiting the stew pot. Life in the henhouse is far more peaceful now. -You could spend 25 cents and win $200 at video poker on a royal flush in Las Vegas, which I did.<br />
-My good friend, Bill, is a treasure beyond words and Pamela is a shining diamond with grace and maturity well beyond her years. Together they make a truly inspiring couple.<br />
-Sarah D. accepting a heartfelt apology from me with open arms and a smile. Forgiveness is underrated and I hope to pay that forward.<br />
